About The Secret Pearl by Mary Balogh

Outside a London theatre, Fleur is struggling to survive by bartering her body when she meets a well-dressed stranger who seems to offer an escape. Their encounter is brief, and she expects never to see him again.

Later, Fleur takes a position as governess to a young girl and discovers that the man she once met is a powerful nobleman. Set against a Regency backdrop, this historical romance follows their wary connection as the threat of scandal complicates the question of whether Fleur will become his mistress or his wife. It will suit readers looking for a character-led romance shaped by secrecy, social standing, and a difficult choice.
