About Sandalwood Death by Mo Yan

Set during the Boxer Rebellion and the final years of the Qing Dynasty, Mo Yan’s historical novel places a family story against the upheaval of anti-imperialist resistance in North China. The narrative focuses on Sun Meiniang and the three paternal figures in her life, including her father, Sun Bing, an opera performer and a leader of the rebellion.

As the revolt’s events unfold, the novel depicts Sun Bing’s approach toward the brutal sandalwood punishment. Its style moves among operatic arias, poetry, an antiquated imperial idiom, and contemporary prose. Readers interested in Chinese historical fiction, the late Qing period, or formally varied literary writing may find this work especially rewarding.
