About Big Breasts & Wide Hips by Mo Yan

Set across the upheavals of twentieth-century China, Mo Yan’s novel centers on Mother, born in 1900 and married into the Shangguan family at seventeen. She has nine children, only one of them a boy: the narrator, whose weakness contrasts with the strength of his eight sisters. Mother’s efforts to protect her children and grandchildren place women and family life at the heart of the story.

Its seven chapters move from the end of the Qing dynasty through the Japanese invasion, civil war, Cultural Revolution, and post-Mao years. The novel combines a broad historical scope with raw, earthy prose and a structure drawing on classical Chinese formalism. It may interest readers of Chinese literature, historical fiction, and novels that view a turbulent period through family experience.
