About Frog by Mo Yan

Yan Mo’s novel follows a playwright nicknamed Tadpole as he plans to write about his aunt, Gugu. Once revered for her skill as a midwife, she later becomes an enforcer of China’s one-child policy, monitoring births in her village and performing abortions, including on women far into pregnancy.

Through Gugu’s story, the novel examines the policy’s impact on families and the conflicts faced by those tasked with carrying it out. Readers interested in modern Chinese history, fiction about political policy, and the personal consequences of state enforcement will find a sharply focused account of a difficult period.
