About In the Absence of Men by Philippe Besson

Set in Paris in the summer of 1916, Philippe Besson’s novel follows Vincent, a sixteen-year-old too young to join the men sent to war. His encounter with Marcel, a middle-aged writer who becomes his mentor, brings Vincent’s desires into view. He also begins a secret affair with Arthur, a young soldier on leave and the son of his governess.

Against the backdrop of wartime Paris, Vincent and Arthur find happiness together while facing the risks of a relationship kept hidden from public view. The novel explores first love, desire, and the tension between private lives and social judgment. It may appeal to readers of queer and historical fiction, especially stories set in France during the First World War.
