About 21st Birthday by James Patterson
SFPD Sergeant Lindsay Boxer is preparing to celebrate her daughter’s birthday when a family case brings her into conflict with rising Chief Charlie Clapper. The case begins when a distressed mother asks Chronicle reporter Cindy Thomas to investigate the disappearance of her daughter, Tara, and baby granddaughter, Lorrie. Cindy brings the matter to the police, but Tara’s husband, Lucas Burke, offers a different account: he says Tara left him, and there is reason to consider that explanation.
As the investigation unfolds, medical examiner Claire Washburn and Assistant District Attorney Yuki Castellano reach their own assessments of Lucas and the case. Lucas then offers a theory connecting the disappearances to a series of copycat killings. This mystery thriller will suit readers drawn to police investigations, conflicting accounts, and a case that may point to a wider danger.
