About Step on a Crack by James Patterson
Set in Manhattan at Christmas, this thriller follows NYPD detective Michael Bennett through a family crisis and a citywide emergency. Bennett is facing the imminent loss of his wife, Maeve, while caring for their ten adopted children when he is called to a hostage situation at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
During the funeral of a former First Lady, armed men take hundreds of attendees hostage. Their leader, Jack, releases most of the captives but keeps several prominent figures and demands millions of dollars from each. As the situation turns deadly, Bennett must try to reason with Jack.
Readers looking for a fast-moving police thriller with a high-stakes hostage crisis and a central character balancing work and family pressures may find this a fitting choice.
