Paul Auster (1947–2024) was an American novelist, poet, essayist, and translator whose work often explores chance, identity, language, and the uncertain nature of storytelling. He became widely known for The New York Trilogy, comprising City of Glass, Ghosts, and The Locked Room. His other novels include Moon Palace, The Book of Illusions, and 4 3 2 1; his nonfiction includes the memoirs Hand to Mouth and Winter Journal. Auster’s spare, searching prose frequently turns everyday events into meditations on how people make meaning from their lives.
