Fran Ross (1935–1985) was an American novelist, journalist, and humorist whose work explored race, identity, language, and cultural belonging with sharp wit and inventive wordplay. She is best known for Oreo (1974), her only published novel, which follows a young Black and Jewish woman on a quest to find her absent father. Blending African American and Jewish traditions with myth, parody, and experimental form, the novel was largely overlooked at first but later gained recognition as a groundbreaking work of postmodern fiction. Ross also worked as a writer in journalism and television.
