About The Women in the Castle by Jessica Shattuck
Set in the aftermath of World War II, Jessica Shattuck’s novel follows three widows connected to the German resistance. Marianne von Lingenfels returns to her husband’s ruined ancestral castle after he is killed for his part in the failed July 20, 1944 plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. She sets out to keep a promise to the other resistance members: to find and protect their wives.
Marianne’s search brings her to Benita, whose young son Martin she rescues from a Nazi reeducation home, and to Ania, a fellow widow living with her two boys in a refugee camp. Their lives converge amid the devastation and displacement of postwar Germany. The novel may appeal to readers interested in World War II, the German resistance, and stories of women and families confronting the war’s aftermath.
