About The Leavers by Lisa Ko
When eleven-year-old Deming Guo’s mother, Polly, an undocumented Chinese immigrant, leaves for her job at a nail salon and does not return, he is left without anyone to care for him. Later adopted by two white college professors, he moves from the Bronx to a small town upstate and is renamed Daniel Wilkinson. The new life they plan for him does not erase his memories of his mother, family, and community.
Set in New York and China, The Leavers follows the effects of Polly’s disappearance and the strain of trying to belong across different families and places. Readers interested in immigration, adoption, family separation, and questions of belonging will find these subjects at the heart of Ko’s novel.
