About Minor Detail by Adania Shibli
Set against the aftermath of the 1948 war, Minor Detail begins in the Negev desert in the summer of 1949. Israeli soldiers attack a Bedouin encampment and capture, rape, and kill a Palestinian teenager. The account places this violence within the history of the Nakba, the displacement and exile of Palestinians that followed the war.
Many years later, a young woman in Ramallah investigates the crime. Her inquiry is bound to the past in a personal way: the assault and murder took place exactly twenty-five years before her birth. Shibli brings the two narratives together, making the book relevant to readers interested in Palestinian history, the Nakba, and fiction that connects historical events with the present.
