About In the Barren Ground by Loreth Anne White
In the Barren Ground is a mystery set in the remote Barrens of northern Canada, where winter darkness, vast distances and sparse population shape everyday life. Rookie police officer Tana Larsson is five months pregnant and newly posted to Twin Rivers, where her superior is unavailable and she is left responsible for an immense territory.
After a report of two students killed in an apparent wolf mauling, Tana must enlist local bush pilot Cameron “Crash” O’Halloran to reach the scene. What they find points to violence beyond an animal attack. The novel combines a police investigation with romantic suspense and gothic and horror overtones, and may appeal to readers drawn to isolated settings, atmospheric mysteries and procedural stories.
