About Everybody's Fool by Richard Russo
Richard Russo returns to North Bath and the characters of Nobody’s Fool in this novel, set roughly a decade after the events of New Year’s Eve 1984. Sully has come by unexpected good fortune, but a VA cardiologist’s estimate that he may have only a year or two to live leaves him struggling with what to tell the people closest to him.
The story also follows Chief of Police Doug Raymer as he tries to identify the man his late wife may have planned to leave him for, alongside Bath’s mayor Gus Moynihan and the precariously lucky Carl Roebuck. Ruth, Rub Squeers, Sully’s family, and siblings Charice and Jerome add to the ensemble. Readers who enjoy character-focused fiction, small-town settings, and Russo’s mix of humor and hard times may find this return to North Bath especially appealing.
