About Emotionally Weird by Kate Atkinson
On an island off the coast of Scotland, Effie and her mother, Nora, take refuge in the old family house and tell each other stories. Nora’s account avoids the question Effie most wants answered: who her real father was. Effie, meanwhile, offers different versions of her college life, including her relationship with Bob, a student who rarely leaves bed or attends lectures.
As the stories unfold, questions gather around Effie’s life and the people nearby: is she being followed, are old people being killed, and what is the yellow dog’s significance? Published in 2001, Kate Atkinson’s comic novel brings together family stories, college life, and mystery, while exploring the strange power of language and meaning. It may suit readers drawn to literary fiction with humor, family relationships, and an unconventional narrative.
