About Christmas in Plains: Memories by Jimmy Carter
Jimmy Carter recalls Christmas in Plains, Georgia, from the traditions of his boyhood to the celebrations he and Rosalynn later created for their own children. His memories include family and community gift-giving, his father’s eggnog, a school Nativity pageant, fireworks, and a reading of Luke’s account of Christ’s birth. He also remembers the poverty of his Black neighbors, a poignant part of the holiday landscape.
The account follows Carter’s Christmases away from home during his years at the Naval Academy and in the Navy, as well as the family’s return to Plains. One exception came in 1980, when the Carters spent Christmas at Camp David during the Iran hostage crisis and invited White House staff and their families to join them. The book offers readers a personal memoir of family rituals, community, and the changing meaning of a holiday across a lifetime.
