About Battle of the Round House by Tananarive Due
Set in 1871, this fantasy short story follows ten-year-old Lucy Freeman and her family as they flee threats in Kentucky for a new life on the post–Civil War frontier. They find refuge at Zipporah Ranch, a hidden settlement founded by Black women and children.
Folktales say the settlement flourishes through magic, but a mob of bounty hunters threatens its safety. Lucy’s own secret magical ability may be the only defense. Readers interested in historical fantasy, Western settings, and short-form mysteries may find this a fitting choice.
