About Anger Is Only a Shadow by Elizabeth Acevedo
Lil wants to be free, but another stay in D.C. juvenile detention has left her on probation, wearing an ankle monitor and carrying the weight of judgment and guilt. As she tries to work out what kind of person she wants to be, the restrictions leave her feeling pinned down.
Her big brother, Aldwin, is away at college and has grown distant. Lil senses that something has been wrong for months, and missed calls and strange texts make her worry about him. With a court hearing approaching, she must decide whether to stay put or risk her future freedom to reach him. Written as a contemporary young adult novel in verse, this story suits readers interested in self-understanding, family ties, and difficult choices.
